On the corner of Boulevard Reyers and Rue Colonel Bourg stands FRAME, the new multifunctional media building for the Brussels media sector. FRAME brings together the regional broadcaster BX1, screen.brussels, the IHECS academy, a coworking space and a business centre for media and audiovisual companies under one roof. The name has a dual meaning. It not only refers to the visual language of the media itself but also alludes to the architectural representation of the building. The rectangular volume is typified by an exoskeleton. A steel frame with rectangular profiles and three-dimensional trusses defines the load-bearing south facade. T-shaped concrete columns on the north side fulfil the load-bearing function. Vertical circulation and technical shafts were strategically placed outside the volume. This creates a ‘blank scenography’ where spacious floors, free of fixed obstacles, enable flexible layouts and maximum utilisation. The building has been turned inside out, so to speak. Functional and structural elements dictate the facade’s image. FRAME is thus the architectural representation of media production.
