MAKER architecten examined future-oriented renovation strategies for student units in Ixelles, originally designed by Willy van Der Meeren for the VUB (Vrije Universiteit Brussel). It centred around four themes: sustainability, energy, heritage and economy. These themes are the basis of four further renovation strategies that focus on developing a layered building envelope. Different layers of recycled or biobased materials are used to adapt the units to contemporary comfort requirements. In other places, prefabricated ‘boxes’ can be integrated between the existing structure. Light, composite facades create interstitial spaces with endless design possibilities. This evaluation took into account the environmental impact, costs, heritage value and energy efficiency. Thanks to the modular systems and different renovation strategies, this project’s solutions can be applied to other places in Brussels.
